Sarcopenia: Why Elderly Adults Lose Muscle and How to Stop It

Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength, begins as early as our thirties and accelerates after sixty. Without intervention, older adults can lose up to three per cent of muscle mass per year, leading to weakness, frailty, and increased fall risk.

The causes are multifactorial: reduced physical activity, hormonal changes, decreased protein synthesis, and poor nutrition all contribute. The consequences are serious — sarcopenia is a leading cause of disability, hospital admission, and loss of independence in older adults.

The good news is that sarcopenia is both preventable and reversible. Resistance training is the most effective intervention. Studies show that even frail, very elderly adults can achieve significant strength gains with structured exercise programmes. Progressive resistance exercises — using body weight, resistance bands, or light weights — rebuild muscle tissue and restore function at any age.

Nutrition also plays a vital role. Adequate protein intake supports muscle maintenance, while vitamin D deficiency (common in older adults in the UK) contributes to muscle weakness.
