Expert post-operative rehabilitation following hip replacement surgery, delivered at home.
Hip replacement is one of the most successful orthopaedic operations in the UK, with around 100,000 procedures performed annually. Postoperative physiotherapy is essential to restore mobility, strength, and function, with most patients returning to normal activities within 3 months.
Who This Service Is Suitable For
Patients recovering from total or partial hip replacement surgery who need guided rehabilitation to safely regain walking, stair climbing, and daily functional independence.
Conditions and Problems It May Help With
What We Work Towards
Treatment may help you work towards the goals below. Your rehabilitation may focus on some or all of these. Goals depend on your assessment, condition and circumstances, and outcomes vary between individuals — they cannot be guaranteed.
- Walking more safely
- Progressing walking aids where appropriate
- Improving strength and movement
- Managing stairs and daily activities
- Returning to normal routines safely
Your First Visit, Step by Step
Knowing what to expect helps you feel prepared. Here is what typically happens at your first home appointment.
- How long it lasts
- Around 60 minutes, in your own home.
- What we ask about
- Your medical history, current symptoms, medications, any recent scans or hospital stays, and what you would like to achieve.
- Assessments we may complete
- Walking, hip movement and strength, stairs and transfers, and how well you are managing your hip precautions.
- Does treatment start straight away?
- Yes — most people begin hands-on treatment and their first exercises during this visit, where appropriate.
- What you receive afterwards
- A written exercise programme, clear advice on what to do between sessions, and a summary of your agreed goals and plan.
- Can a family member or carer attend?
- Yes. A family member or carer is welcome to attend — just let us know when booking.
- Clothing & preparation
- Wear loose clothing that allows access to the hip. Have your walking aid ready.
Practical Questions, Answered
A few things people often want to know before getting in touch.
Can a relative arrange the appointment?
Yes. Family members often arrange the initial call on behalf of a parent, partner or relative. We will speak with the person receiving treatment (or their representative) to confirm what they would like.
Can a carer or family member be present?
Always. A carer or relative is welcome to attend every session, observe, and learn how to support exercises safely between visits.
What if I have limited mobility?
That is exactly who we visit. Treatment takes place in your own home, so there is no travel, no clinic transfer, and exercises are built around the furniture, stairs and spaces you use every day.
Do I need to provide any equipment?
No. Your physiotherapist brings all assessment and treatment equipment to every visit. We simply need a clear, well-lit space to work in.
Can you communicate with my consultant, GP or other clinicians?
Yes, with your consent. We can liaise with your GP, consultant or hospital team and share relevant updates so your rehabilitation fits within your wider care.
How quickly can treatment start?
Same-day or next-day appointments are often available, subject to capacity. After your free phone consultation we will agree a convenient time for your first home visit.
What does the first appointment cost?
Your first visit is £110 and lasts 60 minutes, including the assessment and first treatment. Follow-ups are £99 for 60 minutes, and a package of five visits is £450. Online video consultations are £45 for 30 minutes. Travel is included, and you pay after your appointment by card, bank transfer or cash.
Home Hip Replacement Physiotherapy: Treatment & Rehabilitation
Hip Replacement Rehabilitation at Home
Hip replacement surgery is a highly successful procedure, but the quality of your postoperative rehabilitation directly influences your long-term outcome. Our specialist hip rehabilitation programme is designed to guide you through every stage of recovery — from the first week after surgery through to a full return to your normal activities.
Home-based rehabilitation after hip replacement has been shown to be as effective as outpatient physiotherapy, with the added benefit of reduced travel stress and treatment in your own environment.
Gait Retraining and Walking
Learning to walk normally again after hip replacement is a priority. Our physiotherapists work with you on proper walking technique, gradually reducing your reliance on walking aids as your strength and confidence improve.
At home, we practise walking on the actual surfaces you need to navigate — carpeted hallways, tiled kitchens, uneven garden paths — which is far more relevant than a flat clinic floor.
Stairs, Transfers, and Daily Tasks
Getting on and off chairs, in and out of bed, up and down stairs, and in and out of the car are essential skills after hip replacement. Our physiotherapists teach and practise these tasks with you in your own home, using your own furniture and your own stairs.
This task-specific training builds both competence and confidence, helping you return to independence as quickly and safely as possible.
Strengthening and Long-Term Recovery
The muscles around your hip — particularly the gluteals — need progressive strengthening to support the new joint and restore normal function. Our exercise programmes are carefully graded, starting with gentle movements in the first weeks and building to more challenging exercises over the following months.
Most patients can expect to return to driving around 6 to 8 weeks, resume most daily activities by 3 months, and continue improving for up to a year after surgery.

What Our Patients Say
"Rob is a brilliant physiotherapist. He really helped me after a broken hip. Good advice and a really helpful app with all my exercises on it. I would definitely recommend him. Excellent treatment, thanks Rob."
Karen Wainwright
"Rob is very professional and knowledgeable, really helped my husband (84) who was hospitalised for over 4 weeks and didn't get out of bed. He's got him up and running (not quite!). Hoping to move from the zimmer frame to the walking stick very soon. Would highly recommend, thank you Rob."
Dot Watson
"Rob was absolutely brilliant right from the first session. I had a very complex injury which he was able to advise on in a non-judgmental way. He is extremely knowledgeable, helpful and was able to make so many individualised recommendations in terms of exercises and equipment. The support and advice he provided has made a HUGE difference and I really can't recommend enough!"
Lauren Lovett
"Rob assessed the problem with my knee which was weak and stiff following an injury. As a result of Rob's treatment and exercise programme my knee is considerably improved and I will continue with his exercises until I achieve a complete recovery. I highly recommend Rob's physiotherapy skills and treatment."
