Physiotherapy for Dementia Patients: What Families Need to Know

Dementia affects over 900,000 people in the UK, and the condition has significant physical as well as cognitive impacts. People living with dementia experience progressive mobility decline, increased fall risk, and reduced ability to perform daily activities. Physiotherapy plays an important role in maintaining function and quality of life throughout the disease course.

The physical benefits of physiotherapy for dementia patients include maintaining muscle strength, improving or maintaining balance, preserving walking ability, and preventing the contractures and pressure sores that can develop with reduced mobility. Regular exercise has also been shown to have cognitive benefits, potentially slowing the rate of decline.

Treatment must be adapted to the individual's cognitive abilities. Repetition, simple instructions, demonstration, and familiar routines help. Exercise sessions should be enjoyable and engaging — music, familiar activities, and social interaction all enhance participation. As dementia progresses, the focus shifts from improvement to maintenance and comfort.

Home-based treatment is particularly valuable for dementia patients, as the familiar environment reduces confusion and anxiety. Family members and carers can learn how to support exercises and safe mobility between sessions.

Our home physiotherapy service provides patient, compassionate care for people living with dementia. The falls prevention programme is particularly important, as falls can accelerate cognitive and physical decline. We also support families and carers with education and practical strategies for maintaining safe mobility at home.
